Blue Moves’ “Muse” dance and multi media production celebrates Nashville Artists
Blue Moves’ dance and multimedia production, “Muse: Inspired by Nashville Artists” takes place at the Looby Theater on March 11th, 2017, with a preview event at abrasiveMedia on Saturday, March 4th as part of the city-wide Art Crawl. Focusing on themes of interconnectedness, refuge, balance and imbalance, and mental illness, the performance includes dance premiers and a dance film created by the members of this democratically-run dance company. Also featured is music, visual art and prose by 10 additional local artists whose work inspired or helped shape the dances and film. Adapted from the theme of “Born of the ‘Boro,” a similarly-conceived show and gallery exhibit the company produced in their then-home of Murfreesboro in March 2006, “Muse” celebrates Blue Moves’ new roots in Nashville.
“After more than two decades in Murfreesboro, we relocated the company to Nashville in the fall of 2013, thanks to a partnership with our rehearsal home, DancEast” explains company co-founder Amanda Cantrell Roche. “This production recognizes and celebrates the artistic spirit of Nashville as a vibrant and expanding artistic community, and how much art can be enhanced through collaboration and inspiration across genres.”
Through an open call to artists in the spring of 2016, Blue Moves solicited visual art, music and prose from Nashville-based artists. Company members sifted through the submissions and chose works that spoke to themes choreographers had chosen. In some cases, the submitted music, visual art and prose was integrated into choreography. In others, choreographers invited artists to create new music and visual art in collaboration with their project.
“It’s been a great honor to have my art be an inspiration to the Blue Moves dancers in their creative process,” says visual artist Ben Griffith, whose existing work was chosen for one dance, and who created original watercolor paintings for the short film. “I’m also excited to see what kind of alchemy magic happens as we work together on a video piece. One of the things I’m most grateful for about living in a thriving city like Nashville and is being able to work with all different kinds of artists.”
“Muse” will feature three live dances, a short underwater dance film, live music, spoken word and projected visual art. There will also be an improvisational show opening performance that integrates participating artists’ statements about inspiration and community, as well as audience input. In the lobby before the performance, audience members will be invited to record their response to a question about community. These audio tracks will be looped with others in an amalgamation of responses, to which dancers will respond through movement.
Participating artists include (Visual Art) Ben Griffith, Roberta Winjum, Bryant Lamont and Dar Maleki (Music) Adrian Belew, Kyle Baker, The Ascent of Everest, and Colleen Phelps (Prose) Carolyn German, Elizabeth Howell.
